The next heatwave is rolling in. A few simple rules make the difference – especially for the elderly and children.

Drink before you feel thirsty: in the heat the body needs significantly more fluid – water or unsweetened tea is entirely enough.

Keep your home cool: cross-ventilate at night and early morning, darken during the day. Move exercise to the early morning hours.

The dangerous myth: "a little circulation trouble is normal". Dizziness, confusion or nausea in the heat are warning signs – then get out of the sun, cool down, and if in doubt call the emergency services.

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and longer across Europe – they have long been the continent's deadliest extreme weather. What you learn for yourself today will be common knowledge in the decades to come.

Guide standard: only evidence-based recommendations. Based on public heat-protection advice from the RKI and the German Medical Association. Not a substitute for medical advice.
