Why Electric Cars Recharge When Braking

Anyone driving an electric car for the first time quickly notices something unusual: lift off the accelerator and the car noticeably slows on its own – while charging the battery. This process is called recuperation, or regenerative braking.

The trick lies in the electric motor. When accelerating, it converts electricity into motion. When braking, the process runs in reverse: the motor then works as a generator and turns the moving car's energy back into electricity that flows into the battery.

In a conventional car with a combustion engine, this energy is instead wasted as heat in the brake discs when braking. The electric car recaptures part of it.

A side effect: because the motor already brakes when the pedal is released, the actual brakes are used less often – many electric cars can be driven almost with one pedal. That also spares the brakes.

In context: recuperation noticeably increases range, especially in city traffic with a lot of braking and on downhill stretches. Part of the electricity used to accelerate comes back this way.
