In the takeover battle for Commerzbank, Italy's UniCredit is closing in on a majority – one of Europe's biggest banking questions is coming to a head.

UniCredit continues to expand its stake in Germany's second-largest private bank. Politicians and unions in Germany view this critically: it's about jobs, corporate loans – and the question of who decides over a major German bank.

For customers, nothing changes in the short term. In the medium term, branches, terms and contacts could be reorganised.

Millions of Germans have an account, loan or securities deposit with Commerzbank – and Germany's Mittelstand depends on its corporate loans. Whoever controls the bank helps decide interest rates and lending right on your doorstep.

Own synthesis based on reports from ZDFheute (as of 8 July 2026).
