Why the Low Rhine Could Push Up Fuel Prices

The Rhine is carrying so little water that inland shipping is stalling. At the key measuring point of Kaub, the gauge recently sat below 30 centimetres and is nearing its previous record low. Because a large share of Germany's fuel is transported on the Rhine, this can make fuel supply more expensive.

What the centimetres really mean

This is where many people stumble — understandably: a gauge reading of around 30 centimetres sounds as if there is barely any water left in the Rhine. That is a misunderstanding. The gauge does not measure the actual depth to the riverbed; it is a reference value taken from a fixed zero point. The river is considerably deeper at that spot. But once the gauge falls to this level, the fairway becomes so shallow that tankers can no longer sail fully loaded — they must leave cargo behind or pause altogether.

Why Kaub of all places

The Kaub gauge is considered decisive because it sits at the shallowest point of the Middle Rhine, and every cargo ship from the North Sea ports must pass it to reach the industrial southwest of Germany. This single measuring point therefore effectively determines whether Rhine shipping runs. According to industry sources, most tankers can no longer sail economically when the gauge is very low.

In context: the Rhine is not “disappearing”; rather, the usable fairway becomes too shallow. Less cargo per ship and cancelled trips mean higher transport costs — and those can reach the petrol station. How much depends on how long the dry spell lasts and whether refineries and traders can switch to other routes such as rail and pipeline.
