Apple has lost a court case against stricter EU digital rules – the company must open up its system further.

The EU court dismissed the company's lawsuit. This keeps in place the requirements that oblige large platforms to be more open – for example on app stores and payment services.

Apple had argued that the rules endangered security and user experience. The judges did not follow this reasoning.

In context: more choice of apps and payment services on the iPhone – and a signal to all tech giants that European rules can be enforced even against the most powerful.

Own synthesis based on reports from ZDFheute on the EU court ruling (as of 7 July 2026).
