One Shot Against Many Pathogens: The Dream of a Universal Vaccine

It is considered one of medicine's great dreams: a vaccine that works not against a single pathogen but against many at once. Several research teams around the world have recently come a good deal closer to this goal.

A team at the University of Cambridge has, for the first time, successfully tested an AI-designed universal vaccine against an entire coronavirus family in humans – it triggered immune responses not only to the COVID virus but also to related animal viruses with pandemic potential. A Stanford Medicine team, meanwhile, developed a formula in animal trials that protects against viruses, bacteria and even allergens at once.

The approach differs fundamentally from today's vaccines: instead of targeting one known virus, these vaccines train the immune system on features common to many pathogens – features that persist even when they mutate.

These are still early studies; an approved universal vaccine for everyone remains a long way off.

In context: a yearly flu shot could become unnecessary, and preparation against the next pandemic would be possible before it breaks out – that would change medicine worldwide. For countries with weak healthcare in particular, it would be a blessing.
