Merz Reshuffles His Cabinet – Marred by Mishaps

It was meant to be a signal of renewal – instead it became a signal of chaos. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced his cabinet reshuffle yesterday. But what was planned as an orderly restart turned into a series of mishaps.

The trigger was the resignation of Jens Spahn. Merz used the departure for a larger personnel change – one originally planned for September. The rushed timing brought speed, but also a great deal of confusion.

The most visible blunder concerned the transport ministry: Merz's preferred candidate, Fritz Güntzler, backed out overnight. The chancellor was left without a successor – yet another communication failure that made headlines.

In detail, the picture is friendlier than first impressions suggest. Carsten Linnemann takes over the health ministry, Nina Warken becomes head of the chancellery, and Philipp Amthor becomes federal-state coordinator. The team is getting younger and more female.

Still, a sour aftertaste remains: a chancellor who wanted to demonstrate unity looks, after this day, mostly rushed. What happens next will be decided in the coming week – the post of CDU general secretary is also still open.
